EVERLY

That night, I met up with Asher again in the meadow.

Dream share he’d called it. Heaven was my term.

Like I’d promised myself a billion times after that solitary night, I didn’t waste time for more than a big grin and a heartfelt greeting.

I leaped into his arms and sought his mouth.

His urgency transmitted to me, heightening my sense of desperation.

We tumbled to the ground and in no time, my nightgown lay in the grass, and his pants and T-shirt had joined it.

His touch was exquisite, so full of love that it made my heart split wide open. My body was on fire. He brought it out of me and returned it tenfold.

Touches and sighs turned to moans that dissolved into endless pleasure.

I lay with him after, my pulse a feverish thrum in my ear, listening to his heart beating steadily in his chest. His arms held me tight, and even when life soon wrenched us apart, I’d feel his warm touch lingering on my skin. His love.

“I don’t believe I said hello,” he murmured, his chin snug on top of my head. “How are you, Ev? I missed you. I’ll always miss you. I wish we could be together all the time. When we’re together again, and it’s going to happen, I’m never letting you go. You get that? I love you. I always will. Nothing will ever change that. And if life tries to pull us apart again, I’ll fight it with everything inside me.” His soft chuckle shifted his chest. “In case the spell wears off within the next two seconds, I wanted to tell you all that. I’ve been saving it up, memorizing it.”

I shifted around to face him, propping my upper body above him. He lay beneath me, warm and firm, and my body stirred once more. If we had time, I’d beg him to do it again.

“I love you,” I said, not breaking our locked gazes. His warmed at my words, but I had things I wanted to say too. “I miss you every single second of the day and I pray each night we’ll meet up again and not just in a dream share. I want what we had before and what we have this moment, but I want it to last. I want to fall asleep holding you and wake in the morning to your smile.”

“Ev.” He rose up and kissed me, his lips lingering.

My heart skipped a bunch of beats. If he kept it up, I’d start making demands.

“I’m learning all I can so we can be together soon,” I said. “I’m going to find you and free you. I promise.”

His arms tightened around me. “Don’t do it.”

“You want to be free.”

“Of course. I just don’t want you doing anything to endanger yourself.”

“Each second we’re apart, we’re in danger. Only when we’re together can we protect each other.” I knew this deep within me. It wasn’t a premonition; it was pure truth. He had my back forever, and I had his.

“You know what I mean.
